About The Speaker Dr. Elizabeth O’Donnell Gandolfo is a constructive theologian in the Catholic tradition whose teaching and research interests coalesce around the following themes in feminist and Latin American liberation theologies: the place of motherhood in theology and spirituality; the theological and political significance of remembering suffering; and the decolonial ecclesiology of Christian base communities in Latin America. Her first book, The Power and Vulnerability of Love: A Theological Anthropology (Fortress, 2015), draws on women’s experiences of maternity and natality to construct a theology of suffering and redemption that is anchored in the reality of human vulnerability. She is also co-editor of Parenting as Spiritual Practice and Source for Theology: Mothering Matters (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017), which brings together theological reflections on mothering by women scholars in theology, bible, and ethics. Gandolfo has recently completed a co-authored book manuscript entitled Re-membering the Reign of God: The Decolonial Witness of El Salvador’s Church of the Poor (under contract with Lexington Books) and is in the beginning stages of writing her next monograph, Eco-martyrdom in the Americas: Dying for Our Common Home (under contract with Orbis Books). Her articles have appeared in several edited volumes and in scholarly journals such as Horizons, Spiritus, Theology Today, and Louvain Studies.

School of Divinity Joint Degree Programs Religious leaders are challenged to respond to countless contemporary challenges. Together, joint degrees create opportunities that enhance what each degree offers on its own. Master of Divinity / Masters of Arts in Education This degree is for students seeking to enter vocations at the intersection of religion and public education and/or who are interested in bi-vocational options that link public school teaching with religious leadership in congregational or non-profit contexts. Students enrolled in the joint degree program can complete the requirements for both degrees in four years instead of the five years needed if each program is undertaken separately. Additional joint degrees with other schools and programs of the University include bioethics, counseling, law, sustainability, and a dual degree pathway in management with the School of Business. Master of Divinity Concentrations The Wake Forest University School of Divinity provides an integrative, multi-disciplinary approach to theological education. One of our aims is to equip women and men to be public religious leaders. Several concentrations within the Master of Divinity degree offer courses that allow students to develop skills and gain knowledge specific to particular fields of study and areas of public religious leadership. Religious Leadership in Food, Health, and Ecology Religious leaders today have unique and growing opportunities to impact congregations and communities by understanding the synergistic relationship between food, health, and ecology as each is broadly defined. Public health leaders and institutions and religious leaders and institutions share much history and at least one goal: the well-being of humans and the communities in which they live, work, and play. Religious leaders today become more effective when they cultivate a holistic view of wellness and learn strategies for helping faith communities embody this view in worship, education, mission, and other programs. This Master of Divinity concentration explores the implications for and intersections of contemporary religious leadership with foodways, the health of the public, and ecology through three tracks: food, health, and ecology. Graduate Concentration in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The Graduate Concentration in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Wake Forest is designed to provide graduate students across campus the opportunity to study gender and sexuality from a range of disciplinary perspectives in conjunction with their study toward a professional program’s or master’s degree.

About the Bill J. Leonard Distinguished Service Award Pro Fide Et Humanitate: The Bill J . Leonard Distinguished Service Award is awarded annually to faculty, alumni, or friends of the Wake Forest University School of Divinity . Recipients embody the principle of Wake Forest’s motto of Pro Humanitate and the School’s mission, such as a commitment to diverse faith engagements and to being agents of justice, reconciliation, and compassion in Christian churches and other ministries. The award was established and funded by the late James M. Dunn and his wife, Marilyn, to honor “the life contributions of Bill J. Leonard as teacher, scholar, historian, and as the first dean of the divinity school at Wake Forest .” Dunn served as resident professor of Christianity and public policy from 1999 until his retirement in 2014. The first award was made during the 2009-2010 academic year to commemorate the School’s first class of entering students in 1999 and to honor the Reverend Dr. Bill J. Leonard’s decade of service to the School.
